Doug Howlett, born 6/21/1923, entered fire service 3/1/1948, retired 10/2/1977, died Tuesday September 12 from heart attack.  Doug was at home when it happened.  Doug was dealing with congestive heart failure and emphysema, but was doing well.  He was planning to go to the casino that day and have a good time.

I have many good memories of Doug.  He was a good man.  I can still picture him working with Joe Pistante at Sta#3 on Marina, working the crossword puzzle.  Doug's daughter still loves horses.

There will be a get together on Saturday September 23 at his daughters place:

2016 Ludwig Ave.
Santa Rosa, CA 95407-6415

I will give you more details if I get any.  Doug's daughter's name is Kris and I will give you her e-mail if you contact me.

Hi Rich,

I was saddened to hear of Doug's passing.  Our thoughts and prayers are with

his entire family.  I've taken care of having the ACFD informed.

I hope all is well with you and yours.

Amen! he was always a pleasure to be around. He's the only guy I ever saw do a crossword puzzle with a pen. He was definitely a living example of what Tom Brokaw described as the “Greatest Generation"

Hello Brothers and Sisters:  It’s time to pull the pin. The past 29 plus years have screamed by. It has been an honor to have been working for Alameda County and the true professionals who make our fire department one of the best in the state.

41 years ago at the age of 17 I joined the Alameda County OES Fire/Rescue volunteers never thinking this would be a career path. In 1977 I was hired by Castro Valley and have never looked back.

I will be moving in the next few weeks from Pleasanton to a newly built home outside of Placerville. I plan to be involved with the fire service as a fire commissioner in a local fire district and also be involved in some grant writing. Also I plan to be a reserve deputy sheriff again.

To all the new captains being promoted in 2006 remember to keep your sense of humor. Respect your crews and listen to their idea’s. Keep the lines of communication open. Make sure your crews are informed on what’s going on.

It’s tough to leave but it’s time. Looking at 60 and on an engine is not a good combination.

So it’s Farewell !!!!!!!!!—September 4, 2006 last day.

                                                                                                Sincerely

                                                                                                    Stan

I received a call from a call from Steve Young with an update on Dan. It seems that all went well with the operation and he is recovering well. They are keeping him under observation at the hospital until Monday when he is expected to be released. From what was explained to me via Steve, the Doctor placed an internal drain from his head to his abdomen. He apparently had equivalent to 4 gallons of fluid in his skull when the norm is approximately 1 gallon. He is not taking calls at the hospital, but will be taking calls when he returns home. So continue to keep Dan and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Dan has been diagnosed with fluid on the brain and will be under going an operation to put a shunt in his head to allow the fluid to drain.  He has been experiencing sever headaches and the fluid seems to be the cause.  They plan to do the operation on Thursday and he'll be in the hospital for about 2-3 days and then off work for about 6 weeks.  Dan has requested no phone calls and no visitors at this time.  He'll let us know when he's feeling better.

7/25/2006 from Floyd Nabonne:

Rich: Thought you might like to have a story about Gebhardt.

The classroom at the training area was being built from an old house that was moved rather than being torn down. The then crew at Station 2 were the ones to help in this remodel. They also used CETA personnel (if you want to know what a CETA worker is, ask Lyle Stepman :). Chief Gebhardt had come by to talk with Tony Costa (Captain). As he approached the building, the CETA worker (not Lyle) had been painting the porch area with white paint and was relocating the ladder he was using. Unfortunately, he still had the gallon of latex paint on the ladder while making this move. He relocated the ladder and didn't realize one leg of the ladder was off the porch. As he climbed the ladder to continue painting, the ladder tilted sharply and threw the paint can off onto the asphalt. The can hit on its side with the opening aligned directly at Charlie. When the can hit the ground, the paint became a projectile jumping out of the can and hit Charlie from head to toe with white paint. He was wearing his blue surge uniform, ike jacket and all. Being firemen, it took all the control we could to not fall out laughing at the site. We helped him clean a little, and he went home in his fire car. We later learned that he had actually gotten all the paint out of his uniform.

I enjoyed seeing him the times he attended the retiree's lunch given by Alameda County Fire, but I never had the heart to remind him of this story.

CHARLES VINCENT GEBHARDT B. July 3, 1921 D. July 16, 2006 Charles Vincent Gebhardt, Former Deputy Fire Chief of San Leandro passed away Sunday evening, July 16th at his home in Fremont, surrounded by his family and holding the hand of his beloved wife, after a year long battle with cancer. Charles had just celebrated his 85th birthday on July 3rd. Born in Rhode Island, he came to the west coast while serving in the Army during WW2 and met his wife Virginia while walking along a beach in San Francisco. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in April with a party filled with family, friends and fond memories. The couple lived in San Leandro for almost 40 years, while raising six children. Charles served the San Leandro Fire Dept. for 27 years, 20 of those as Deputy Chief before retiring in 1977. Fourteen years ago they moved to Fremont. Grandson, Bryan Gebhardt, is a Fremont School Board Trustee and grandson, Michael Gebhardt, is a Fremont Policeman. Upon his retirement Charles & Virginia enjoyed many years at their summer home on Savary Island in British Columbia, Canada where he created a workshop that became the "Home Depot" of the island. "Charlie" loved trips to Reno, playing Keno & slots, but got the most pleasure out of the Gebhardt Family Poker games where he was known for taking the "big pots" from his grandkids! He is survived by his beloved wife Virginia, and their children & spouses: Charles & Janice of Fremont, Ginger & Steve Cathey of Wolfpoint, Montana, Wilma & Mike Stanton of Fremont, Russ & Janet of San Leandro, Glenn & Donna of Ripon, Mark & Rick of Oakland. He will be deeply missed by his 14 grandchildren and great-granddaughter. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society, Vitas Hospice (866-268-4827) or your favorite charity. Private services will be held.

high on the list and was appointed Asst., the position that he held until he retired. I’ll always remember him as a fair and conscientious Chief and I admired him.

Although I haven't been able to attend the last few retiree’s breakfasts, the ones I did attend Charlie was always there with that big smile on his face.  He will

It was quite a year at the Fair.  I want to thank all those individuals that spent time both the response personnel and the Fire Prevention staff that made sure all the booths were safely operated, and that the fireworks went off without any problems.  We were busy with all the hot days and I heard very positive feed back from the Fair Board members as well as the Fair Director Rick Pickering.

I want to congratulate those that participated in the Tug of War with the Sheriff’s Department they are still stinging from the defeat.  We also had another victory against the Sheriff’s Department. Dean Lundstrom, Rich Brown and Armigh Carrizalez participated in the cooking contest. Armigh was the winner and won $750 that was donated to the Alameda County Firefighter’s Random Acts.  Great work, we are everywhere!!!

It was also Assistant Chief Brown’s last year, and I want to thank him for his leadership over the past years, his coaching brought us another victory at the Tug of War, and some of you may not know, but he had a race named after him, I didn’t say horse race because it was actually a mule race (I’ll leave the obvious references to all of you when you see Rich).  It was also Lt. Knudsen’s last Fair this year as he is retiring, Jim will be greatly missed.  Jim was one of the key people involved in bringing us to the Fair, and even though his emails around the tug of war may sound like he didn’t support us, he is a very strong supporter of our organization.

Thanks to all that participated!!

Hi Rich,

I know that you have never met me. I have been retired from San Leandro Fire Dept. since September 1, 1969.  I worked for the Mulford Gardens Fire District as an engineer and we were annexed to San Leandro in 1958.  I started to work with Daymon Orr, Ray Jannson, Roy Jones etc.  I retired on September 1, 1969 and moved to Oregon.  Let me bring you up to speed as to what I have been doing these past years.  I have a small cabinet shop and do small wood working jobs (custom).  I am 80 years old and in fair health.  I am very much involved in civic and government (city & County) as a volunteer.  I served 5 two year terms as mayor of the City of Talent after serving as a planning commissioner, city council and budget committee.  I now am serving my third term (4 years) as a civil service commissioner (volunteer, no pay) for Jackson County Fire District #5.  There are three members on this commission.  All of us have fire department backgrounds.  Our duties are to approve the department budget, all lists from firefighter to captains, review all disciplinary action.  My assignment is to sign all lists that are good for 18 months.  Enclosed is a photo of me at the main station in Talent (city volunteer department was annexed to fire district #5 in 1996).

Rich, thank you very much in sending me the Bresnan Distributor.  It keeps me up to speed as to my old buddies.  I was very sad to see that they tore down the Davis Street Station.  I spent many years there working with Daymon Orr, Roy Jones and Captain Harsh.  Well Rich, I guess I will close for now.

This being said, it is that time of year again.  Our ACFD / ACFFA summer blood drive is here.

Our local banks take huge hits during the summer months.  More people are out and about resulting in more injuries and illness.  It truly does not take much to deplete our bank levels.  One accident, one fall, whatever happens, it doesn’t take much.

The American Red Cross counts on 35 – 40 pints from us and our community.  We have exceeded this before and we can do it again.

Please come and spend an hour or so of your time, so that others can spend more time with the ones they love.

6/4/2006 from Bill Robertson:

Hi Rich:

Sorry this took so long, but I’m kept pretty busy looking after my wife with her memory loss.

Meant to get this to you sooner, so all good intentions are finally met.

As I sent to you in E-mail, was sorry to hear of your loss, my sincerest sympathies.

Finally got on a computer, thanks to my daughter (a school teacher at Monroe).  She gave me this I-Mac, but where I’m at in Clear Lake they only have “Dial-up” service, so my operations are very slow.  Bear with me on this thing as I’m a novice & have lots to learn about computers.

Sorry I missed the breakfast, but my travels are limited what with my wife’s problems.  I did hear from my old friend Ryder though, so I’m able to keep up, along with your Bresnan, which is great.  Sure are a bunch of us old gray heads now.

Enjoyed your photos of the old Davis St. Station.  That station opened the year before I was hired.  I worked there at times, once with Glenn “Pappy” Crouch (Capt.) along with Costa, Underwood and others.  Also remember the house visible next door.  That was Herb Bahr’s in-laws.  He used to go over and till the soil for a garden for them (by shovel that is).  I also worked with Herb at the old City Hall Station #1.  (Think I sent you photos of him with others.)

There I go with nostalgia again.  At my 80 years now I’ve still got a memory though.

You take care and hello to all of my old cronies and friends from the past.

Bill Robertson

6/3/2006 from Pam Biscotti:

Dear Rich:

I am writing this for Fred Biscotti.  He is back to work at this blessed Cemetery.  This is not to say that he should be.  He is working way to much, and is not well yet.

I have finally got some time to write cards to people who have sent us emails, calls, flowers, and concern.  We have had firemen fly here to Chester to see Fred.  It is with this brotherly love that Fred was able to get up from his surgery.

I have not written you about this.  I will make it brief as it not pleasant.  He had almost 13 hours of surgery, he lost a great deal of blood.  The cancer was in his bladder, appendix, sigmoid, intestines, and  a blockage in his  colon.  He lost his bladder, and a great deal of weight.  It was brutal.  He was in ICU for 1 day.  He had tubes coming out of his stomach, and they made a bladder attaching his intestine, or part of it to his kidneys.  This comes out of his abdomen.  They did not watch him as they should, and I found him half off the bed with mucous choking him.

When he was in ICU, he was so pale I could not see his lips, and his hands and feet were numb.  He pretty much had given up.  A fireman he trained here in Chester, who at the time thought Fred was an sob, came to ICU.  This fireman, after being trained by Fred, went to Iraq, and fought for our Country for 4 years.  He came back, saluted Fred, and told him he learned to be a man from him.  Now he returns to make Fred live.  Fred got up and walked his first time that day.

The hospital sent him home without discharge papers, with a fever, and in hallucinations.  They also sent him home with the wrong bladder bags.  It was stressful, as there is no place in this County that knows about such things as an ostomy bag.  It was another fireman who saw the stress I was in, brought me food, and took Fred on the 4 hour drive to a place he could be fitted with the right size ostomy bag.  This fireman told me I had to rest, other wise he would not take Fred.  I needed to lay down, as trying to keep him dry, kept me up day and night.

Fred now has a bag, and an overnight bag that attaches to it.  He can only lie on his back, and his back is giving him pain from  doing that.  He is having trouble with his bowels, as they took out so much.  He is in more pain now, I think then before his surgery.  I write this, and at this time he has worked 14 days straight, and before that he was down for 3 days and nights with 102 temperature.  I nursed him back, and he returned to work.  He is now taking a nap, and will wake up hungry.

I now want to thank each and every brother that took the time to call, email, fly in to see him, send cards, and flowers.  I know that some called at the hospital, and found that he did not know who he was and was very concerned about pacific standard time.  I know it was painful to hear him like that, and to see him with the tubes.

I talked to Sam Chiscolm's widow, and found that she and I have a lot in common.

I ask all brothers to take this advice.  I know you are MEN, and I know YOU save lives.  It is with some men that they refuse to see a Doctor.  It is especially true when you are in a rural town, and you don't have a real doctor.   So I beg you, if you are sick, see a real Doctor, and think about what he wants you to do.

In Fred's case, he had no choice, he started hemorrhaging in November of last year.  He had to have surgery.  When he had it, the doctor, a Dr. Fritzler, left the cancer, as he stated Fred had good insurance, and he could go back in the following week and put in a new bladder.  This doctor now has charges against him.  From there Fred saw many Doctors, and had many tests.  He was finally told that he had to have RADICAL Surgery.  When told how bad it would be Fred chose not to have it, and live his days tell he met his CREATOR.

His Doctor, upon hearing this, told us that Fred would die a extremely painful death without the surgery.  This was very upsetting to both of us, and I told Fred I loved and supported him, and I would stand behind his choice and care for him with my soul.  Fred really had no choice, and had the surgery.

I am sure my beloved husband thinks every day as  he finds something else that hurts, or his dignity  taken , how much more is there.

When I say one of many prayers, THE LORDS PRAYER reminds me, that GOD"S will , will be done.  I give this man I love to Jesus, and I ask that HIS will be done.  I know then, that it will be good no matter, as HE has the power and glory always.

I close asking for prayer, and thanking you and your brothers for your kindness, love, devotion, and the beautiful flowers, which will grow on and bloom and be beautiful.  If there is an address, I will be happy to send you a card to express in a few words my love for all of you.

May all of us remember as Bill Pedroni always says, the golden years, the years for the old guys, when someone was building a deck his whole shift came out to help.

Thank you again for everything.

Retired Captain Fred Biscotti, Castro Valley Fire Department AKA ALAMEDA COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT.

Subject: First Annual Guns & Hoses Softball game

Hello Everyone,

It was a beautiful evening for softball at Thrasher Park.  Both ACFD and SLPD had a great turn out of fans and ball players.  SLPD had a lot of great left handed hitters in there line up to take advantage of the short porch in right field and the westward winds.  It was a good strategy, but it was not enough to stop the offensive onslaught of the ACFD.  Through our consistent hitting, smart base running and the occasional home run, we were able to put the hurt to the police department.  The final score was ACFD 40 (that’s right, forty), SLPD 23.  In case you are wondering about the high score, we played a 9 inning game with no 10 run rule.

Here was the starting line up:

P-Tom Neureburg           C-Eric Frago                  1B-Jess Anderson          2B-Eric Moore               3B-Ryan Nishimoto

SS-Brent Whalley          L-Brian Centoni              LC-Dan Burke                RC-Jason LeMoine         R-Ryan Agrella

Utility player (who was all over the place) - Ken Sparaco

A special thanks has to go to the umpire crew:  behind the plate with the liberal strike zone, Mick Roark, and on the bases, young Ryan Neuerburg.  Mick was last scene being stopped by a SLPD officer on Orchard and Davis Street.

Also we would like to thank Wellington Jackson, Thurman Owens and Jim Martinez for standing by for us C shifters to be able to appear.

We also appreciate the crews from 9-C for supporting us with there presence and starting the “Let’s go ALCO” chant.

But most importantly, we got the Big Trophy.  It is temporarily housed a station 9, but like the Stanley Cup, it will be making appearances everywhere.

A good time was had by all who played and attended.  The final tally of the total money donated will hopefully be out soon.

Thanks again for all of you continued support and hopefully we will see you next year.

Respectfully,  Jess Anderson

Hi Guys:

I seem to be getting things lined up so I can start tomorrow for San Leandro so I can be there Monday morning in time for the breakfast.

I just read the letter from Dave Patterson.  I really hope he will be attending.  Also I lost contact with Joe Neves and Wally Wallenius and

hope they will be there.  I really am excited about the prospect of visiting old friends and hope as many as possible will be there.

(Well that was a bit premature sent by accident, but I might as well send it now, since everyone will read it anywayJ)

Hi All,

After 28 plus years in the fire service, my career is at an end, I leave with mixed feelings.  This job is very hard to walk away from, but my body has had enough. With that said, I would like to thank everyone at ACFD, from Chief McCammon, on down, for a job well done. I am proud to have been a part of the Alameda County Fire Department and to have worked with such a fine group of people.  I wish all of you a happy life and safe career.

If I had to do it all again, I would gladly. If I owe anyone an apology, you got it. The mistakes I have made, I hope to have learned from.  If I owe any one money, to bad. If I had one tool to use in the fire service it would be a deck-gun.

Looking back there have been so many memorable experiences. Being on the Cypress Structure after the Loma Prieta earthquake for 19 hours was one big event. Being up in the Oakland Hills shortly after the Oakland Fire Storm took off was another. (That one I almost lost my crew to a burning house coming down the hill.)  The many deaths and injuries I have seen over the years will not soon be forgotten.  The wonderful personalities that wonder the halls of these fire house

3/28/2006 from Dave Patterson:

Hi Rich,

We want to thank you for all your work in getting the Bresnan to us retirees.

We are not into computers, so all our correspondence has to be through the Post Office or Telephone.

Sorry to hear of the passing of Rich Solomon.  In the article in the Bresnan it didn’t mention that he was the son-in-law of Verne Avilla.

Was glad to see the article from my old buddy Roy Jones.  I first worked with Roy in January of 1955.  We were at Fire Station #1 at the rear of the San Leandro City Hall.  Our crew consisted of Captain Crouch, Engineers Roy Jones and Joe Neves.  The firefighters were Livio Lozza, Chip Singer and myself.  Those names should bring back some memories from the older retirees.

Once again we want to thank you for all the time and effort you put into the newsletter.

Dave “Pat” Patterson
